S.D.Worley, an emeritus professor of chemistry in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, will give Auburn University’s 2012-13 Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecture Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 3 p.m. in the Langdon Hall auditorium.

His lecture, “Invention of a Water Disinfectant – Laboratory to Marketplace,” will address his role in the development of a drinking water disinfectant that utilizes special beads with germ-killing agents. The N-halamine technology, as it is known, was commercialized by Seattle-based HaloSource Inc. and is used to disinfect drinking water in several developing nations.
“This award is important because it is the culmination of my work over a 35-year career at Auburn; it recognizes the work of the many graduate students whom I have had the honor to mentor,” Worley said.
Worley earned a bachelor’s degree from Auburn in 1964 and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969. He returned to Auburn as a faculty member in 1974. During his tenure at Auburn, he supervised the research of 18 doctoral students, 12 master’s students and 13 post-doctoral fellows. In addition to his many university awards for teaching and research, Worley has authored more than 250 journal publications and is the holder of more than 40 patents on antimicrobial technology.
Worley is the 39th lecturer in the Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecture series, which is jointly sponsored by the Graduate School and the Auburn Alumni Association. Since beginning in the 1975-76 academic year, it has developed into a major university lecture series that fosters a better understanding of the scholarly contributions made by Auburn’s faculty. Nominations for the honor are solicited from the university’s faculty, and the recipient is selected by a committee of graduate faculty members. The lecturer receives a $2,000 award from the Auburn Alumni Association.
